Even when we’re not riding them, our motorcycles are always near and dear to our hearts. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that your bike is stored properly and safely. Here are a few “must-haves” to get your bike ready for storage so that it will be ready when you are! If you have any questions, visit Harley-Davidson of Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne, Indiana, serving riders in Fort Wayne, Auburn and Kendallville, Indiana.

Battery Tenders or Trickle Chargers

You need to keep your battery in a cool, dry place when your bike is in storage, and you’ll want to make sure that it doesn’t lose its charge or get overcharged. A battery maintainer monitors your battery charge level and switches over to float mode when the battery is fully charged. A trickle charger slowly charges your battery, and many models can be left on a battery indefinitely. Be sure to review your manufacturer’s recommendations to determine which type of charger is best for your motorcycle’s battery.

Fuel Additives

If you don’t want to have to drain your bike’s fuel tank, a small bottle of Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer or a similar additive will keep the gas from separating and gumming up. Sta-Bil can keep your fuel fresh for up to 24 months so you’ll always be ready to ride. It removes water and condensation buildup and it also cleans your carburetors and fuel injectors. You should also add Sta-Bil to any stored gas in your garage or shed.

Cleaners and Protectants

You’ll want to give your bike a good wipedown and wax job, and then add an anti-corrosive overcoat. There are a number of easy-to-use aerosol products that serve as a layer of protective armor for your bike. Be sure that the products you buy are safe to use on all of your chrome and paint and follow all of the instructions to use them properly.

Storage Security

In addition to all of your locks, anchors, kill switches and countermeasures, a layer of window tint is a great way to discourage prying eyes. You can find tint in a variety of different shades and darknesses. Top it off with mesh on the windows for extra security. Most motorcycle thefts are crimes of opportunity, and window tint is a cheap way to keep people honest. It also keeps your garage a little bit cooler.
